Gran Teatre del Liceu

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has, unlike other theatres, been built with private contributions instead of contributions from the government. The Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona opened it's doors on the 4th of April 1847, with a varied program of symphonic works, opera's and plays.



On the 31th of January the Gran Teatre del Liceu set fire for the second time. Just like in 1861, almost everything was gone. The answer of the government and the population was obvious: The Gran Teatre del Liceu had to be rebuilt on the same spot as soon as possible. This lead to the re-opening of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in October 1999.

The most important works of Mozart, Puccini, Rossini, Verdi, Strauss, Wagner, etc. were sang by the most beautiful voices of the past two centuries. Domingo, Pavarotti, Caballe, Callas en Tebaldi will for ever have a special place in the hearts of the crowd.

In the last 25 years a lot of young people became fan of these works and visit the Gran Teatre del Liceu on a regular basis for performances.
