Gran Teatre del Liceu
The Gran Teatre del Liceu has, unlike other theatres, been built with private contributions instead of contributions from the government. The Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona opened it's doors on the 4th of April 1847, with a varied program of symphonic works, opera's and plays.
On the 31th of January the Gran Teatre del Liceu set fire for the second time. Just like in 1861, almost everything was gone. The answer of the government and the population was obvious: The Gran Teatre del Liceu had to be rebuilt on the same spot as soon as possible. This lead to the re-opening of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in October 1999.
The most important works of Mozart, Puccini, Rossini, Verdi, Strauss, Wagner, etc. were sang by the most beautiful voices of the past two centuries. Domingo, Pavarotti, Caballe, Callas en Tebaldi will for ever have a special place in the hearts of the crowd.

Palau de la Música Catalana
The Palau de la Música Catalana is a concerthall in Barcelona. It was designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the architects from the beginning of the Catalan Modernism. The building started in 1905 and was finished in 1908.

The assigners of the building of Palau de la Música Catalana were a group of Catalan textile industrials, organised in a choir community, Orfeó Català, with her roots on different places in the old part of Barcelona. With almost 1400 members in 1905 the community thought it was time for a central spot for vocal art. Therefore they layed the first brick of Palau de la Música Catalana together.

The outside walls of Palau de la Música Catalana are from red stone, supported by pillars, that also are decorated with mosaic. On the corner hangs a big image of Miquel Blay, called "the Catalan anthem". Besides that there are three bustes above the facade from Palestrina, Bach and Beethoven. The building contains big windows and a lot of decorational paintings. Above the stage you can find big organ pipes and images of Richard Wagner and Josep Clavé. The hall has 2073 seats. In 1997 it was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The life of Francisco de Paula del Villar
The Spanish architect Francisco de Paula del Villar y Lozano studied and obtained the title of architect in Madrid, at the academy of San Fernando in 1962. The following year he won by the opposition chair of Architecture Legal Provincal Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona in his section of teaching Masters Works.
In 1854 Francisco de Paula del Villar designed a serie of hospitals for emergency care for people who were suffering the cholera epidemic. He was librarian of the Provincal Academy of Fine Arts, corresponder for the San Fernando, member of the Provincial Commission of Monuments, president of the Association of Architects and director of the College of Architecture.
As architect Francisco had a lot of work to do. He restored the church of Santa Maria del Pi, Santa Maria de Vilafranca and the House of Mercy. He was also the author of numerous parish churches and he designed the apse of the Monastery of Montserrat, together with Antoni Gaudí.
In 1877 Francisco de Paula del Villar was commissioned by the association of Devotees of St. Joseph to build the Sagrada Familia church. Villar conceived a large Gothic project, but ended up only building the crypt. In 1883 Francisco left the project because of disagreements with Joan Martorell and consultant architect Josep Maria Bocabella. Afterwards Antoni Gaudí was assigned for the project of the Sagrada Familia.

Carnaval in Barcelona is a traditional event, which is certainly worth a visit. The week of festivities starts off with Jueves Ladero (Fat Thursday) with a tortilla eating match.
On friday all the people take rest so that they can continue partying on saturday.
Saturday is the biggest day of Carnaval in Barcelona. First the “pimiento de oro” (golden pepper) will be awarded to the best entertainer in Barcelona. Later on the day the world famous Gran Rua de Carnaval will take place near the seaside of Barcelona.
